Bernardo O’Higgins was the main independence figure of Chile during the Indepence wars of the XIX Century. The son of an Irish immigrant who escaped to South America looking for a better life  (and somehow became the Viceroy of Peru), Bernardo was raised alone.

Away from his father, who he barely met, and her mother Isabel who also barely knew his father, Bernardo was often bullied for being an orphan, a “huacho”. Educated in England, where he met Francisco de Miranda and became imbued in revolutionary ideals, he was a man of few words and ill temper who dreamt, among other things, on the main avenue of Santiago populated with European poplars instead of trash.

Once he became Supreme Leader… that dream came true.

Today there is only one of those imigrant poplars left standing there, in conversation with the native Quintrales that -being very fond of poplars-, are described by many as a pest. But the invasive species is the Poplar so… it’s hard to describe the Quintral as a pest.

This is the result of Bernardo’s dream: coming straight from his polychromed sleepy life supported head, a dream with unintended consequences, livestreamed for all of us to watch, observe and comment in the age of reality shows and artworks as content.
