Like many artists, the current Covid crisis implied cancelling or indefinitely postponing exhibitions, residencies and trips that I thought were important in my emerging career. I took the situation of the quarantine - which followed a very complicated period of social unrest in Chile, as a starting point to let go these aspirations: realizing that in periods of uncertainty the only sensible way I could keep working was to create works that where open ended, unrestrained by any sort of long term planning or preconceived image.
Quarentennials started then as a habit, one that could hopefully shed some light on the memory of the current moment and help me make peace with the present time; reimagining the (nowadays) old practice of drawing doodles while talking on dialup phones, I started calling people over while simultaneously drawing on a computer tablet and capturing the development of this open ended and real time drawing as a video. The resulting pieces, ranging from 5 to 90 minutes, become the trace of an incomplete conversation: one where, since I speak over a microphone, the only voice that remains is my own; the interlocutor reduced to a barely distinguishable dialog.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Claude Shannon’s theory of Communication; specifically, on the diagram he elaborated where message is defined as the problem of bridging the gap between sender and receiver, regardless of the amount of noise that exists between them.
The ongoing habit has evolved into performances that include drawing while piloting a drone to visit a friend, among other experiments: hoping to inhabit the social distance that has become our “new normality”, and in doing so, finding a practice that sits in between me as an artist, the now invisible art object and the receiver(s) of this message: either the persons I talk to or people that check my social media accounts.

Como muchxs artistas, la crisis sanitaria implicó cancelar o posponer indefinidamente exposiciones, residencias y viajes que yo pensaba eran importantes para el futuro de mi carrera. Sin embargo el futuro llegó igual, por lo que asumo que no eran tan importantes para el futuro en general ni para para mi carrera en particular. Cuando asumí esto tomé la situación de cuarentena como punto de partida para abandonar cualquier plan y aspiracion: entendiendo que durante períodos de incertidumbre, la única forma sensible de seguir creando es abriéndose a la creación de obras indeterminadas, abiertas, desprovistas de cualquier tipo de certeza, imagen preconcevida o estrategia especulativa de largo plazo.
Estos dibujos cuarentenos -todavía no se como se llaman, comenzaron como la creación de un hábito. Uno que permitiese ojalá alumbrar este momento, y ayudarme a hacer las paces con el tiempo presente. Reimaginando la hoy obsoleta práctica de dibujar garabatos mientras se hablaba por teléfono, comencé a llamar a personas mientras, simultáneamente, dibujaba en una tableta gráfica un garabato incierto cuyo proceso de realización es capturado como un "speeddrawing". Los videos resultantes, que duran entre 3 y 90 minutos, son el remanente de una conversación incompleta, donde lo que queda es mi voz, un dibujo que no se bien que significa y el murmullo ininteligible de alguien al otro lado.
Ultimamente he pensado mucho en la Teoría Matemática de la Comunicación de Claude E. Shannon. Particularmente sobre el diagrama en el que define comunicación como el como el problema de eliminar el ruido que se sitúa entre quien emite un mensaje y quien lo recibe. No me queda claro cual es el problema con el ruido: ¿que hay de malo en escuchar a medias o confundir de vez en cuando las cosas?
Este hábito de conversar haciendo otras cosas que ha sufrido, afortunadamente, algunos cambios. Como la de ir a visitar amistades por dron y apenas poder verlas y otros juegos por el estilo. Supongo que finalmente estos son ejercicios que pretenden habitar la distancia social que ahora es "la nueva normalidad", buscando en ello encontrar una forma de creación que se sitúe en la zona indiferenciada existente entre artista, obra de arte y quien recibe esta obra hecha mensaje: sea la(s) persona(s) con que converso, quien sea que se tome el tiempo de querer revisar mis redes sociales o quien lee estas lineas en una página web.
